Home Safety Network

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Home Safety Network?

The Home Safety Network is modeled after a nationwide program called “Safe Homes”. It is a support network for parents of children who live in Northborough, Southborough, or Westborough, concerned about teenage alcohol and drug use at home parties. Members agree to supervise their children’s parties, and do the best they can to ensure that no alcohol or drugs are available to kids at those get-togethers .

What age do kids usually begin drinking?

The average age of teenagers having their first drink is 12.3 years. 71% of 7 th -12 th grade students in Massachusetts admit ever using alcohol. 21% of Massachusetts students, 9 th-12 th grade admit to driving after drinking.*

What can parents do to help prevent their children form drinking?

Statistics show that children are less likely to drink if parents: know where they are and who they are with; talk with their children about drinking and set clear expectations around their behavior; enforce consequences when the rules set around drinking are broken; and model responsible drinking.

Isn’t it my decision to allow kids to have alcohol in my own house?

The law states that it is illegal to serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 21 years of age in Massachusetts (other than your own child). Adults who serve underage teens visiting their home are taking away a parent’s right to decide what is appropriate for their child. Also, kids who might otherwise choose not to drink are faced with a dilemma when adults make the offer. Finally, adults who allow teens to drink are fostering a disrespect of the law by sending kids the message that the rules don’t apply to them.

How is the Home Safety Network funded?

The Home Safety Network is run completely by volunteers. We are funded solely by donations.
