Home Safety Network

MINUTES 5/16/06

  • Safe Rides-Michaela Duggin, a junior at Algonquin,  presented an idea to provide students with safe rides home by their peers.  Drivers would be 18 years old an would need to have had their license for at least 6 months so they can transport kids and drive between 12:00am and 5:00am.  We discussed whether parents would be notified and how that would impact whether kids utilized the program.  Also discussed concerns about safety, liability, etc.  Laurel Aroian stated that her husband has been involved in trying to initiate a similar program.  Michaela agreed to contact Rich Aroian so they can work together.  All agreed it is an important effort and very worthwhile.
  • Mission Statement-Reviewed final mission statement.  Agreed that it addressed the goals of the HSN
  • Website-We discussed the website and places we should ask to post our link.  Agreed that we should be listed at all the schools (middle and high) in all 3 towns, at all 3 town websites, at all 3 police websites, and at the N/S district website.  Also spoke about getting an article into the gray book that comes to all N/S parents in late August.  Ann will contact superintendent's office re: submitting an article.
  • Post Prom Party-Noel Bane gave an overview of this year's post prom party.  Discussed ways to discourage parents from hosting private after prom parties and encouraging post prom party attendance.  Agreed to send out email to Junior parents promoting the post prom party.  Discussed sports events and ways in which those activities are impacting students' abilities to attend the post prom party.  The lacrosse coach has set a curfew of 1:00am.  Will contact Fran Whitten to discuss further.
  • Relay for Life-Discussed recent email to HSN distribution list by Ann.  Some felt the email was helpful, others felt it was alarmist and may have caused some parents to panic.  Discussed safety precautions taken by the American Cancer Society.
  • Next Meeting-Our next meeting will be at the Westborough High School on Tuesday, June 20th at 7:30.  We will meet in the school library.
